The open secret of Ireland Tom Kettle 9781176910348 Books
This is a book advocating Home Rule for Ireland written by Thomas Michael Kettle, whose aim is to educate the English public of his day as to why Home Rule for Ireland ought to be supported. It's interesting to read this in the context of the current debate regarding the Union triggered by Scotland's proposed referendum. A lot of the arguments presented remain applicable. At its heart it's basically a case for local democracy. As an argument it's well presented and clearly articulated, and the author sometimes has a nice turn of phrase. Although with the benefit of hindsight it's clear that he significantly misjudges the determination and strength of Unionism as a political force, and of Republicanism's impatience and willingness to jump the gun to force what was probably an inevitability anyway.
It's worth to have a look at the author's wikipedia biography. Interesting man. He met his end in 1916 on the Western Front at the Battle of the Somme.
Anyway, an enjoyable and accessible book.
